Learn About Aunty Rae’s Journey from Passion to Purpose
I am a fourth-generation Territorian with a rich tapestry of experiences that have shaped my culinary journey.
Growing up in Darwin, I was immersed in a vibrant mix of cultures—my mother’s Chinese heritage and my father’s Queensland roots. This diverse background instilled in me a love for food and the joy of communal dining, where flavours come alive amidst the chatter of family gatherings.

After Cyclone Tracey devastated Darwin when I was just 14, my resilience blossomed. I ventured into various careers, from dental therapy to the public service and eventually self-employment, I  always maintained a connection to my community. However, my passion for food remained at the forefront, leading me back to the kitchen where I found solace and creativity.

The Inspiration Behind Uu-mah-mia

The spark for Uu-mah-mia ignited from my desire to share the flavours of the Northern Territory with the world. During my Covid gardening passion in Alice Springs, I found I had an abundance of chillies that inspired me to create something special. I experimented tirelessly in my home kitchen, blending sun-dried chillies with crispy shallots, garlic, and a touch of umami magic. This journey culminated in the creation of my first product, Hot Lips Chilli Bits.

As feedback poured in from family and friends who craved more crunch and flavour, I expanded my range to include Fire Lips, Sweet Lips, and Cool Lips. Each product embodies my dedication to quality ingredients sourced locally wherever possible, ensuring that every jar is packed with flavour and character.

Creating Community Connections

My mission goes beyond selling condiments; I aim to foster connections within my community and celebrate the rich heritage of the Northern Territory. By collaborating with local producers for chillies and garlic, I support sustainable practices while bringing people together through shared culinary experiences.

Uu-mah-mia is not just about heat; it’s about transforming everyday meals into extraordinary adventures. From quick weeknight dinners to lavish gatherings, each jar invites everyone to unleash their inner chef and embrace easy cooking.

The thing I love most about my business…

…is witnessing peoples’ faces light up as they take their first bite.

That brings me immense joy every time.
